The Chocoholic’s Guide to the Scottish Borders

Jessica Johnston

Whether you love it melted in a cup, drizzled over ice cream or presented in a gorgeous ribboned box, chocolate really is amazing for the soul.

But did you know that the Scottish Borders is actually a bit of a hotspot for artisan chocolates? In fact, the region has various skilled chocolatiers who can create heaven from humble cocoa beans. So since Easter is almost upon is, here is our chocoholic's guide to the Borders...

The Chocolate House, Jedburgh
This picturesque shop has a real olde worlde vibe. You might almost feel as if you have stepped back in time as you browse the prettily boxed sweets, colourful chocolates and lollipops.

That said, some of the individual chocolates are very up-to-date, including the gin & tonic, prosecco and banoffee flavours. Soya choices are also available for vegans, while other unique treats include chocolate spanners for dad and chintzy, sweet-filled teacups that gran will love. Gifts and crafts are also sold in the shop.

Cocoature, Berwick-upon-Tweed
The Cocoature team pride themselves on creating elegantly dressed artisan chocolates. Their philosophy is that nothing compares to eating handmade treats, as the stimulating tastes and textures create a richly intense feeling. Walk inside the store and you will be dazzled by the trays of eye-catching chocolates decorated in swirls of colour and gilt.

Highlights include the customer favourite of white chocolate & strawberry, as well as cognac & honey and white chocolate spiced orange gin truffles. And if you'd like to learn a few insider secrets, you can even take part in a Chocolate Workshop.

With both celebrities and members of the royal family as fans, Ruth certainly knows her stuff. Pop into her Peebles store and you will find luxury handmade boxed chocolates and gooey cakes galore.

Highlights include the chocolate truffles, the ruby & macadamia nut bars and the cappuccino mousse cake. And if you'd like to linger longer, you can also enjoy a very indulgent hot chocolate in the shop's cafe.

Simply Delicious, Melrose
As well as boxed chocolates made on-premise, this family-owned independent shop and cafe sells lots of other treats too. These include gourmet chocolate bars from Choc Affair, Giacopazzi's of Eyemouth Ice Cream, homemade tablet, freshly made cakes, tray bakes, hot drinks and snacks.

As outside tables are available, this is an ideal spot to head to for a chocolate ice cream on a sunny day. You should also keep an eye out for speciality offerings like the ruby & raspberry shards and the chocolate coal.
