You can park at Abbotsford and then follow the path towards the Visitor Centre. Just before the Visitor Centre turn right and follow the Borders Abbeys Way (BAW)downhill. .
The BAW turns right but instead continue a few metres on downhill then turn left into the field. Follow the path across the field towards the river.
Follow the path up onto a low embankment and follow this across the field heading away from the river. Then go through the gate into the wood and turn left. At the junction with the drive bear right and go uphill following the drive at it swings round to the right.
You will come to the lodge house and take care crossing the main road, then go straight ahead through a gate into the wood and continue uphill.
Turn left at the road and head downhill and you will now be back on the Borders Abbey Way. Keep going straight ahead and cross the road, again with care, and continue downhill for 50 metres or so and you will see the Visitor Centre on the left and the car park on the right.
In summer you will see yellow rattle and meadowsweet flowers in the fields and in the woods look out for nuthatch, treecreeper, greatspotted woodpecker and other woodland birds.
Circular walk of 3 miles or 5 kms. The terrain is mainly paths and minor roads but some stretches can be muddy after rain so boots or walking shoes are recommended.
You can park at Abbotsford and from the car park follow the path towards the Visitor Centre then turn right and follow the Borders Abbeys Way downhill.
Before the river bear right along a wide tracked which goes under the road bridge. Follow the BAW along the river. Go under the Redbridge Viaduct and past Lowood House to reach the road at Lowood Bridge.
Turn right, leaving the BAW and climb a flight of wooden steps. Turn left at the top and follow the road to the bend. Turn right at the bend and follow the Southern Upland Way along a tarmac path. You will pass a modern environmentally friendly office building.
At the cross roads turn left and as the road bends left, cross the grassy area to join the Solway Woodland Trail. Follow this trail for about half a mile through woodland.
Leave this trail at the steps at the gate, cross the road and turn left. At the roundabout cross the road, with care, and go straight on through a gate and up a slope back to the car park.
Coffee and Cake, Lunch or Afternoon Tea at Ochiltrees which is at the Visitor Centre at Abbotsford. Not only great food, all locally sourced, but lovely views as well.
